Physical Therapy
The Center’s physical therapists intervene to address issues affecting the musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems. Infants, babies, toddlers, young children and adolescents are evaluated for movement disorders, range of motion, posture, strength, muscle tone, balance, gross motor skills, mobility, and gait. We have experience working with children who are diagnosed with: cerebral palsy, prematurity, torticollis, orthopedic concerns, spina bifida, Down Syndrome, sensory integration disorders, S/P dorsal rhizotomies, S/P Botox injections, neuromuscular diseases, Erb’s palsy, peripheral neuropathies, stroke, and a variety of genetic conditions and syndromes. Physical therapists also access the equipment needs of the child.
Our physical therapists have extensive knowledge of foot biomechanics and function. In conjuction with the child’s orthopedist, we evaluate the orthotic needs of our clients. We offer serial casting, and casting for Cascade DAFOs, with follow up visits for proper orthotic fit. CPT’s physical therapists communicate with the child’s doctors and orthotists to establish team communication during the child’s orthopedic visits. We are certified in Therapeutic Electrical Stimulation (TES) allowing us to evaluate and treat, with a physician’s order.
We are knowledgable in the use of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES). Rigid kinetic taping is another useful therapy tool utilized at the Center.
Functional mobility within the child’s environment is stressed during treatment, and the goals of the family and child are considered in all treatment plans.
The physical therapy department is trained in the use of Thera Togs which are an elasticized orthotic garment with strapping options that can be worn by a child or adult having difficulties with posture, balance, and/or stability. The physical therapists carefully evaluate the individual to identify problems of bony malalignments or structural deformity, muscle imbalance or joint laxity. Children with permanent bony changes have to exercise caution and restrain in seeking correction.
Our therapists also utilize The Universal Exercise Unit(UEU), also known as the Spider. The Spider is a 4 sided metal apparatus with bungee cords attached to a specialized belt worn by the child and then attached to the side panels. This system provides dynamic support and can be used in sitting, standing, balance and jumping activities so that the child can move safely. It is used for muscle strengthening, endurance, coordination, proprioceptive and kinesthetic awareness.
As adjuncts to a child’s regular therapy program, we offer Therapeutic Aquatics continuously throughout the year, Hippotherapy, therapy with the aid of a horse, is offered from November through March, and Rock Climbing.
We also offer consultations, evaluations, treatment, and home programs for our international clients. Se habla Espanol.
